The poem “Nightfall on Mtatsminda” is a structurally complex lyrical text built upon the alternation of the narrator's and the experiencer's voices. The analysis is based on the identification of schematas and their corresponding cognitive scripts (Peter Huhn), which help to establish the principles of plot construction and to identify underlying mental processes. Two core thematic templates are revealed in the poem:
- Escaping sorrow and melancholy through immersion in nature
- Recalling past experiences for the purpose of their narrative reconstruction
The first template aligns with the philosophy of Romanticism, where nature serves as a meditative space spiritually akin to the human self, as both are seen to emanate from the Absolute (Schelling). The second is rooted in cognitive theory and relates to mechanisms of autobiographical memory. These templates help the reader determine the poem’s narrative structure and understand how episodic memory is reconstructed through narration.
The narrator not only describes a specific episode but also reflects the mental processes related to the act of remembering, which gives the poem discursive depth and creates a high level of narrativity. The experiencer functions on the story level, while the narrator operates on the discourse level. Their alternation shapes the dynamic of narration and simultaneously reflects a lyrical process of self-reflection. Ultimately, the analysis reveals that the text embodies complex intellectual processes – an effort to define personal identity through memory. Considering the lyrical genre’s fragmentary and segmented nature, it is difficult to sharply distinguish between narrator and character, but the use of templates and scripts aids this interpretation. Based on the theoretical foundations of Romanticism and cognitive science, the poem is revealed to express a process of remembrance, where the recalled event is vital for the narrator's identity. The narrative act of remembering serves the function of preserving this significant memory within the “archive” of personal identity.
